between the lines ...

i found a postcard in an old book, which says as much in the date it was written and postmarked, as in the message itself.

"I didn't make it.. - walked 2,250 mi & then stopped because of a combination of obstacles: intense heat, painful ulcer between 2 toes & impossible banked, graveled road shoulders in Canada.
The flip side is that I now understand that love and family are more to be valued than macho accomplishments.
Thank you for your interest & concern.
May you live in peace & harmony.
Hal"

the date on the card simply said Sept. 2001.  but it was postmarked from East Marion, NY on September 12, 2001.  two hours away from New York City.

the day after 9/11.

i don't know if "Hal" dropped it in a mailbox that morning, or the Saturday before.  if his words were written in retrospect to the tragedy that occurred, or simply the thoughts of a man who had a lot of time to think on his 2,250 mile walk.
but regardless ... what wisdom he shared...

Love and family are more to be valued than macho accomplishments.

  1. How I wish that more people were aware of his wisdom. World wide.
